West Iceland Healthcare Centre


West Iceland Healthcare Centre (HVE) was established on 1 January 2010. The Healthcare Centre came into being with the merger of eight health institutions in West Iceland:

  • Akranes Hospital and Health Centre
  • Borgarnes Health Centre   
  • Búðardalur Health Centre   
  • Grundarfjörður Health Centre   
  • Hólmavík Health Centre   
  • Hvammstangi Health Centre   
  • Ólafsvík Health Centre   
  • Stykkishólmur Health Centre and the St Francis Hospital

West Iceland Healthcare Centre employs approximately 440 people, and its budget for 2011 amounted to ISK 2.9bn.
 
The Healthcare Centre serves a population of almost 18,000. Its operational area also includes many holiday cottages, while a large number of patients seeking treatment in Akranes and Stykkishólmur were resident outside the Healthcare Centre’s service area.

 

The role of the West Iceland Healthcare Centre is to provide general and specialist health services in the West Iceland region in compliance with current legislation and regulations. The services will extend to residents in the region and others seeking them.The Healthcare Centre attaches great importance to respect, trust and professionalism.The welfare of patients is paramount.

Health services

According to Article 4 of Act No. 40/2007 on health services, health centre services cover general treatments, nursing, preventive measures and health protection, accident and emergency facilities and other services. The following basic services are available in all health centres in the region:

  • Medical practice services
  • Nursing services
  • Home nursing
  • Prenatal care
  • Child health services
  • School health services
  • Preventive measures and health protection
  • Round-the-clock services


Hospital services in West Iceland

Hospital and specialist services are available in four of the Healthcare Centre’s eight health centres.

  • HVE Akranes has four wards: surgical ward, gynaecology ward, medical ward and geriatric ward. Day-patient care is provided in the surgical, gynaecological, medical and treatment departments and in the accident and operating rooms alongside general day-care services provided by specialists.
  • HVE Hólmavík has nursing wards and an emergency room.
  • HVE Hvammstangi has nursing wards and an emergency room.
  • HVE Stykkishólmur has a specialist 5-day ward for neck and back patients alongside a nursing ward and an emergency room.
